How To Make Money Online Without Social Media

The most nerve-racking thing about not having a traditional 9-to-5, for me, has always been this lingering sense of,

“What if this all goes away?”

  • Where’s my next client?

  • Will there be a next client?

  • Is it safe to book that vacation now?

In my first business, I was a chronically overextended content agency owner reaching millions on Instagram, bringing in between $18K and $30K a month, and seriously questioning my life choices.

I wish I could tell you that fears of under-earning faded at that point, but the truth was, I was terrified that if I let anything slip for a second, I’d be uploading my resume to LinkedIn praying the gap in employment wouldn’t be noticed.

It was fine for a while.

But spending six to eight hours a day in Canva, chronically checking social media metrics for both my clients and myself, and enduring the not-so-subtle symptoms that pile up when you don’t know how to rest took a toll.

You might think this story is leading to a revelation that I gained both financial safety and peace of mind when I phased out my done-for-you social media clients and later paused posting on Instagram...

...but the first thing that happened when I pivoted was that the panic got exponentially worse.

I was drowning in the narrative that I’d never be able to earn enough to feel supported and successful, especially without being consistent on social media.

I imagined that even if people came across my IG profile, they’d see a “dead” account and move right along.

But that's actually not what happened.

The StoryCraft Newsletter welcomes 35–55 new readers every single month from Instagram—even though I haven’t posted since October.

And I didn't need to post for them to find my content.

In retrospect, my Irish exit from IG wasn’t flawless. There are a half-dozen things I’d do differently if I had a redo button.

But one thing I thank God I did right was sharing search-optimized Instagram carousels before I ever believed leaving social media was realistic for a business owner in 2026.

Why?

  1. Keywords, not hashtags, are how algorithms know what content to put front-and-center on the Explore Page. Content appears on the Explore Page, and in Meta search results, based on interest—not when the post was created. Relevancy is the critical ranking feature of a “for-you” algorithm. R.I.P chronological feed. This has been true for years, but it matters a lot more now because…

  2. Instagram posts, as of July 2025, show up both in Google search results and AI chat bot recommendations. That means a few well-placed keywords makes your Instagram content discoverable off the ‘Gram for days, weeks, months, or, in my case, more than a year after you hit publish.

For most people, IG posts disappear after 24 hours.

But by leveraging the platform’s searchability features and its most engaging format, carousels, I gained an unexpected asset that brings new people into my corner of the internet regardless of whether I’m actively posting.

While Instagram SEO is not the only strategy I use to create predictable income in my business without posting daily on social media, it’s a huge part of it.

And every time I get a notification that a new subscriber found their way here via Instagram, the voice of fear that questions, “Will this all go away?” quiets down a little more.
